The ABC Murders is Kenneth Branagh’s best Death on The Nile Sequel
Poirot returns to London after solving the Murder on the Orient Express mystery. He must solve a “murder on the Bloody Nile.” This teaser seems to have set up what Poirot would do in Death on the Nile. The sequel confirms that Poirot was indeed sent to Cairo to solve the murder mystery.
It was a totally different case from the one Poirot is actually assigned to in Death on the Nile. This effectively retreads the ending of Murder on the Orient Express, and renders the teaser setup completely unnecessary.
The second Poirot film’s murder on the Nile doesn’t really take place until the famous sleuth is on board the boat with those who will eventually become suspects. The note that the British Army messenger left at the end Murder on the Orient Express would not have made sense given the context of the sequel, which implied that the murder had already occurred.
Actually, Poirot went to Egypt in Death on the Nile to investigate Rosalie Otterbourne (singer Salome Otterbourne’s niece, manager) on behalf Euphemia, Bouc’s mother. Euphemia is dissatisfied that Bouc is with Rosalie, and she wants to discover if there is anything in her past that could be used to break them apart.
Poirot thinks Linnet’s death is secondary to his. In the end, revealing Poirot’s return from Cairo at the beginning of the film to then send him back for something completely different doesn’t do justice to the ending set up from Murder on the Orient Express.
Other Information
If the sequel was not going to capitalize on this, why tease Death on the Nile’s events in the first film?
Poirot’s presence in the film and Bouc’s friendship with him make them both connected. Back-to-back viewers will be dismayed by the concluding teaser, which implies an offscreen murder.
It’s possible that Murder on the Orient Express teased the mystery of Death on the Nile. However, it was only intended to keep the fans interested before the filmmakers chose to take a different route at the beginning.
The fact that Poirot is reunited with Death on the Nile’s characters before the killer strikes makes it seem like the detective was there by chance. This negates the original film’s ending and makes the sequel work and stand on its merits.
