Aaron William: Family and friends are mourning the cruel murder of a recent BYU-Idaho graduate and former missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remembering him for his wit, potential, talents, and what one friend described as “radical love.”

Aaron William Davis, 21, of Cumming, Georgia, was stabbed roughly 20 times, according to Floyd County Deputy Coroner Chris Giles. On Saturday, his corpse was discovered buried beneath a few inches of earth beneath a fallen oak tree in an isolated part of Rome, Georgia, according to Giles.

“By now, most of you have heard that our son Aaron  brutally snatched from us,” his father, Randy Davis, said on Facebook. Davis’s companion was arrested on suspicion of murder by Rome police. Randy Davis told the Deseret News, “We’re heartbroken and feel betrayed because it’s a friend who’s been implicated.”

According to police records, Brandon Christopher Risner, 21, detained on Saturday and charged on charges of murder and concealing the death. There have been no formal charges filed.

Before the Risner family relocated to Rome, Davis and Risner were members of the same Latter-day Saint church as youths. Risner has stayed at the Davis house several times. According to a university official, Risner will also attend BYU-Idaho for a semester in the fall of 2021. Randy Davis described him as “like our son.” “We have no idea what happened.” Police did not provide a suspected motivation, but a police report and warrants revealed further information about what occurred.

Who was Aaron William Davis?

Aaron William Davis born in Rhode Island and spent his childhood in nearby Massachusetts until migrating to Georgia with his family in 2011. He was a popular student at North Forsyth High School. “You can see how many people’s lives he touched through his Facebook posts,” Randy Davis noted. “He had the ability to be a friend to those who didn’t always have one,” he said. Davis was Mr. Everyman, and he had a wide range of appeal.”

“I don’t know where to start… “Where can you find the words to begin to cope with such a horrific loss?” asked his Facebook pal JJ (Jenna) Castaeda lvarez.

“Aaron was like a bright star,” she continued. “He was always the most funny guy in the room, trying to make everyone laugh” (and usually succeeding). Aaron was also one of the brightest, though he was modest and would never admit it. He was always polite and nice. He always gave his best effort and inspired me to do the same. Aaron was a painter, philosopher, and hopeless romantic.”

According to his father, Davis was a Renaissance man who loved science fiction, fantasy, and theatre as well as Dostoevsky, was a movie critic, and respected scholastic endeavours. He laboured as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ in the Nevada Las Vegas West Mission.

According to his father, Davis walked during BYU-commencement Idaho’s exercises in April. Davis received his bachelor’s degree in political science in July after completing a legal internship in North Carolina, according to BYU-Idaho spokesperson Brett Crandall.

Randy Davis stated on Thursday morning that he aced the GACE, the Georgia test for graduate school admission. Aaron Davis planned to attend Middle Georgia State University to get a master’s degree and teach high school civics. He also hoped to seek a Ph.D.

The investigation by the police

Rome is midway between Aaron Davis’s hometown of Cumming, Georgia, and his girlfriend’s hometown of Gadsden, Alabama. Randy Davis said Aaron Davis was last seen and spoken with by the Davis family on Thursday afternoon, before leaving for a trip to see his girlfriend.

On Thursday, he planned to travel around 60 miles to Rome to spend the night with his friend Brandon Risner. Randy Davis indicated that he would then go another 60 miles on Friday morning to meet his fiancée.

On Friday, Aaron’s girlfriend tried to reach him, but his phone switched off. Risner notified Randy Davis that Aaron’s phone had died and that his plans had changed; he would stay with Risner on Friday and then travel to Alabama

Until Saturday morning, when Rome Police got a complaint of an abandoned vehicle, the Davis family had no reason to be concerned. They called Randy Davis to inquire about Aaron’s car, which they discovered in a ditch in neutral, as if it had been purposely slid into the ditch, Randy Davis explained.

Aaron’s mother, Sara Rennick Davis, issued a Facebook appeal.

“Please help,” she wrote. “We can’t get through to our kid, Aaron Davis.” The police in Rome, Georgia, recently called to advise my husband that his car had been discovered in a ditch. He supposed to be in (Gadsden, Alabama). Please contact us if you have any information.”

Aaron Davis’ body would be discovered later in woods near a little constructed cul-de-sac in the city’s Old East Rome neighbourhood, according to Giles, the deputy coroner.

According to police report, Davis positively identified at the scene by his BYU-Idaho ID. According to Giles, the county coroner performed an autopsy on Monday. The official cause of death had not yet been determined.

Why did police arrest Brandon Risner?

When the car found, Randy Davis reported Aaron missing, and the Aaron William family contacted nearby hospitals. As soon as they learned where Aaron had spent the night, police in Rome’s Old East Rome neighbourhood started searching.

The police investigation found “evidence of foul play” where Mr. Davis last seen, according to the report. Witnesses on the scene worked with authorities and provided information that helped identify the culprit. “Criminal investigators arrived and collected evidence from the crime scene.”

According to Randy Davis, when the Rome police arrived to question Risner, Risner departed mid-interview. A police warrant states that the accused “committed the offence of impeding law enforcement when he fled from officers during a missing person inquiry and defied all orders to stop.”

Risner later turned himself up, according to the police report. The police report states, “As the investigation developed and leads investigated, the deceased body of Mr. Davis recovered along Tumlin Drive.”

According to Giles, Aaron Davis’ body was located in a six-to-eight-foot hole caused by a large, uprooted, and fallen oak tree, hidden beneath 6 to 12 inches of earth.

Risner arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, concealing another’s death, and deliberately impeding law enforcement. Risner’s bond initially refused by Floyd County Magistrate Court Judge John E. McClellan.

Six children were born to Randy and Sara Davis. The family has spent years relying on Latter-day Saint beliefs about the afterlife because they lost their eight-month-old son in an accidental drowning 15 years ago.

Randy Davis remarked, “We know we’ll be together one day. We are ecstatic that he was born under the covenant and will live out his days with us. Even though we wish he were here right now, we know he will be protected and loved in the afterlife, and soon we will be together.
