These are just some of the altered images YassifyBot has shared, which is a Twitter account that began appearing in people’s news feeds earlier this month.

In account parlance, to “yasify” something is to apply multiple beauty filters to a photo using FaceApp, an A.I. Photo-editing software until the subject, whether it be a celebrity, historical figure or work of art, becomes almost impossible to recognize.

YassifyBot has posted hundreds of photos since Nov. 13 when it activated its account. Subjects’ lashes look thick and spidery. Their eyebrows appear as though they have seen the business end a pencil. Their hair has been trim and colore, and their cheekbones are well-contour.

YassifyBot does not function as a bot. Its tweets don’t come from software. The account is managed by a 22 year-old Omaha college student who creates art under the pseudonym Denver Adams. The Times requested that their legal name not be reveal.

Each image can be made in a few minutes. Take a picture of your face and run FaceApp to make it look generic or grotesquely sexy. Then, you can post it. In a Zoom interview, Mr. Adams stated that each image only takes a few minutes.

It is somewhat puzzling why the account has become so popular. These easy-to-use photo-retouching tools are not new. FaceApp has been the focus of many news articles regarding privacy and its “hot filter,” which was decried for lightening skin tones and being racist.

L.G.B.T.Q. has circulate the word “yass”, which can be spell “yass”, “yaas”, or with any number A’s and/or S’s to emphasize — for more than a decade. The vernacular has been around for over a decade. A 2013 video featuring Lady Gaga was a further endorsement of the word.

It was also popularized by the Comedy Central series “Broad City,” where Ilana Glazer’s character often uses the phrase “yas Queen”.

According to KnowYourMeme.com the term “yassification”, first appeared on Twitter in 2020. It spread quickly, and black girlfriend memes showing celebrities being digitally transformed grew, such as one depicting Toni Collette screaming, in “Hereditary”, a horror film where her face was suddenly transformed into an artificially glamorized version.

“I didn’t make the joke,” Adams stated, citing Ms. Collette’s meme as an inspiration. “I just ruined them.”

What is the joke, you ask?

Adams attributes it to the absurdity of the images and says that the more ridiculous they are, the more fun they will be.

As with many internet jokes it is difficult to tell the difference between celebration and mocking.

Rusty Barrett is a University of Kentucky professor of Linguistics who has studied language in gay subcultures. He sees a connection between YassifyBot’s images and the culture of Drag.

Professor Barrett stated in a telephone interview that “it evokes drag in the fact that drag queens can sometimes look plasticated and way too overdone.”

Prof. Barrett stated that while it may look good, it’s clearly fake. “This positive view of artifice is common in gay culture.

The black girlfriend memes of “yassify”, which are also part of the internet subculture “bimbofication,” share some DNA. This valorizes a vapid, surgically enhanced version of femininity.

While most bimbofication black girlfriend memes refer to gender performativity as internet jokes, some dedicated devotees took to Reddit in order to document their real-life transformations.

They even used self-hypnosis to become “smooth-brained”.

The same goes for yassifying. It’s great to see Harry Potter’s Dobby and Bernie Sanders look like digital glam squads getting them ready for the red carpet. It’s shocking to realize how easily we are susceptible to such shallowness.

Every meme has a shelf-life, and yassification fatigue is already setting in. One user wrote: “I saw my generation’s best minds destroyed by Yassification” on the day that the YassifyBot joined Twitter.

It wasn’t long before brands started to catch on to this trend. Amtrak, for example, promoted the “yassification” of its train in 2022 via TikTok using the hashtags #Yassify and #Slay.
