Cincinnati Zoo Celebrates Birth of First Zoo Baby: Ajani Joe is a female bonobo
Ajani Joe is not your average rhinoceros. This specimen is not only the smallest bonobo ever but also the first of its kind to be born in the United States. It’s not uncommon to see this primate scurrying around its surroundings as though it were one of its own kind. These diminutive creatures weigh in at 1,760 to 3,080 pounds. They are the apex predators of their sub-species and use brute force tactics to protect themselves and their offspring.
Cincinnati Zoo Celebrates Birth of First Zoo Baby: Bibi gave birth to another hippopotamus calf
The Cincinnati Zoo has announced that Bibi gave birth to a new hippopotamus calf on August 3rd. This is the newest addition to the Cincinnati Zoo family and the second calf for 23-year-old Bibi.
Bibi and her calf will spend the next two weeks bonding behind the scenes. In the meantime, zoo staff will be sharing photos and videos of the pair on social media.
The hippopotamus calf was born around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, weighing around 60 pounds. It is the newest sibling for Fiona, the hippo that won hearts around the world when she was born prematurely in 2017.
According to the zoo, the new calf is a boy. They’ve decided not to name the baby yet. But they are accepting suggestions for names.

Elephant Reserve is home to two subspecies of Asian elephants
The Cincinnati Zoo is currently home to two subspecies of Asian elephant. They are the forest elephant and the savanna elephant.
Elephants are the largest land mammals in Asia, but they are also the most endangered. The population has decreased by 50 percent in the last 75 years. Their biggest killer is the EEHV virus, which is prevalent in North America.
Cincinnati Zoo is committed to helping these animals survive in their natural habitats. The zoo is working to stop the illegal trafficking of wild elephants. It also funds Conservation Response Units in Sumatra.

Despite the fact that Fiona isn’t able to be a mother yet, the new calf will latch onto her for at least a few months. A video shows the new calf shaking water out of its ears.
