Giovanni Quintella Bezerra: 32, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on July 10 after nurses became suspicious of his behaviour during two C-sections that day and secretly recorded him during a third, when he allegedly hit the patient.

Police were already looking into whether the first two patients had been attacked, and now they say that three more women who were treated by him on different days have come forward to say that he hurt them. This makes at least six women who say he hurt them.

Bezerra went to court for the first time on Tuesday. A judge put him in solitary confinement for as long as the case is being looked into.

He has been locked up at Bangu, which is Brazil’s largest prison complex. It is west of Rio and is known for having some of the country’s most dangerous and violent prisoners. When he got there last night, prisoners booed and banged on their cell bars.

The anaesthetist is being looked into because of claims that he or she attacked six people, according to The Daily Mail. The 32-year-old health worker works at the Hospital da Mulher in So Joo de Meriti, Rio de Janeiro. Two months ago, he finished his training in anaesthesia, the news outlet says.

Globo, a Brazilian news site, said that local police officer Barbara Lomb said that Bezerra’s colleagues’ actions were “exemplary.”
Lomb told Globo, “It is important to highlight the work of the nursing team and other great health professionals who noticed the doctor’s body moving during other surgeries.”

In the same Globo report, the Health Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Secretary of State for Health said, “An internal investigation will be started to take administrative measures.”
The team at Hospital da Mulher is giving the victim and her family all the help they need. This is a crime that must be punished according to the law.”

Staff members who saw the rape said that the doctor had already done two similar procedures that day, and police are looking into whether those two women were also assaulted.

On Tuesday, July 12, a custody hearing for the doctor was held.

In Brazil, he is accused of rape and could spend anywhere from 8 to 15 years in prison.
