Instagram Increases Ban On Suicide Content To Include Cartoons
suicide meme Instagram has extended its ban on self-harm imagery that is graphically rendered to include fictional suicide illustrations and methods of suicide.
“We have expanded our policies to ban more self-harm and suicide content over the past month.” Instagram boss Adam Mosseri explains the new policy change by saying that we will no longer allow any fictional representations of self-harm and suicide on Instagram.
We will also remove any imagery that does not depict self-harm, suicide, but includes associated materials and methods.

After the public outcry by the Russell family, a 14 year old U.K schoolgirl who committed suicide after seeing suicide content on Instagram, the company came under intense pressure from the country.
The Facebook-owned social media platform said in February that it would ban graphic images of self harm, such as cutting, as well as restrict access to non-graphic content such as images of healed scars. It also stated that it wouldn’t recommend it in search results.
It also said that it was considering using sensitive screens to blur non-graphical content about suicide. However, it stated that it was still in consultation with experts.
It appears that it has decided to go even further, stating it will now remove fictional content about self-harm and any depiction of suicide or self harm.
Instagram claims it has doubled its self-harm content since the previous policy change. Mosseri wrote that the three-month period following the ban on graphic images cutting it had “removed or reduced the visibility of, added sensitivity screens, to more than 8334,000 pieces of content.”
He adds that more than 77% of the content was reported by the platform before it was discovered.

The Instagram boss wrote in a blog post that the policy change was “based on expert advice by academics and mental healthcare organisations such as the Samaritans UK and National Suicide Prevention Line USA.
” He said: “We aim at striking the difficult balance between allowing people share their mental health experiences and protecting others from exposure to potentially harmful content.”

He also said that we will send more people localized helplines such as the Samaritans or PAPYRUS in UK, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the United States and The Trevor Project in the United States.
He continues to argue that these issues are complex and cannot be solved by one company or set of policies. However, he defends continuing to allow suicide and self-harm content to Instagram.
He says that experts tell him that giving people the opportunity to share their most challenging moments and stories of recovery can help to provide support.
“Blocking people from sharing such content would not only stigmatize mental health issues but also hinder loved ones from responding to a cry to get help.”
“But, getting our approach right takes more than just a change in our policies or an update to our technology. This is a never-ending task. He says that technology and policies must adapt to new trends and changes in behavior.
