Jim Harbaugh Predicts Criminal Charges For Michigan State Players
Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh Criminal Charges indicated on Monday to be filed in connection with an investigation of violence that broke out in the stadium tunnel after their Wolverines defeated Michigan State on Saturday.
Jim Harbaugh Criminal Charges noted an “ongoing police investigation,” noting “what happened in the tunnel was appalling. It’s sickening to watch videos like those being shared on social media right now.”
Video footage from different angles revealed several Spartans players apparently assaulting Michigan State’s Ja’Den McBurrows and Gemon Green. On Sunday, Michigan State Coach Mel Tucker announced the indefinite suspensions of four players: redshirt sophomore linebacker Itayvion “Tank” Brown; redshirt sophomore cornerback Khary Crump; junior safety Angelo Grose; and freshman defensive end Zion Young.
At a news conference on Monday, Tucker made it clear: “We will not accept any excuses for the behaviors on Saturday.” She went on to state: “These behaviors are completely unacceptable.”
On Tuesday, Michigan State coach Larry Tucker announced the suspension of four more players: freshman cornerback Malcolm Jones, redshirt junior cornerback Justin White, senior linebacker/defensive end Jacoby Windmon, and senior defensive end Brandon Wright.
“Accountability is necessary,” Harbaugh declared to reporters before Tucker took the podium on Monday. “There must be an exhaustive and timely investigation conducted.”
“I can’t imagine this won’t lead to criminal charges,” he stated. “The videos are bad, and it’s clear what transpired. This is very open-and-shut. As they say: watch the tape.”
Video footage shared soon after the game ended showed Brown, Grose, and Young pushing and punching McBurrows. Footage from an ABC/ESPN camera mounted in the tunnel appeared to show Green being hit with a Spartans helmet with Crump involved; Windmon could be seen taking off his helmet to grab Green.
Harbaugh noted that by positioning the ABC/ESPN camera at a “higher elevation,” they could capture much more of what transpired during the incident.
“As a parent,” Harbaugh said, “I am approaching this from an understanding that these young men have been entrusted to me by their families for our program.
We must treat each player like one of our own and take that responsibility very seriously. Apologies will not suffice in this instance – there must be serious consequences for those responsible.”

On Sunday night, Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. issued a statement through their athletic department lamenting this incident and the unacceptable behavior displayed by members of their football program.
“On behalf of Michigan State University, I sincerely apologize to the University of Michigan and those injured,” Stanley said. “There can be no justification for the behavior we see in these videos – rivalries can be intense but never violent.”
Alan Haller, Michigan State Athletic Director, issued a statement concurring that suspensions of the four players were “necessary” given the “alarming evidence” surrounding their involvement.
“We sincerely regret our decisions,” said coach Gary Kubiak, who is in his third season with the Spartans. “Our fans, alumni, and supporters – as well as of course all our student-athletes past and present – for this tragedy.”
“The incidents involving a small group of our players do not reflect our culture,” Tucker stressed.

Tucker declined to respond to reporters’ queries regarding Harbaugh’s potential criminal charges and whether other Spartans players did enough to prevent the assaults.
Citing police and university/Big Ten investigations, Tucker indicated he had not made a decision yet on what action should be taken regarding these matters.
At his news conference, Harbaugh did not elaborate on why McBurrows and Green – both sophomore defensive backs – were walking through the tunnel toward their locker rooms at the same time as Michigan State players.

At halftime of Michigan’s previous home game against Penn State, players from both teams engaged in an animated exchange. Penn State Coach James Franklin later described the shared usage of one tunnel as “a problem,” prompting Harbaugh to accuse Franklin of being the “ringleader” in this confrontation. Franklin called for a brief “buffer” period before Michigan players followed them into the tunnel and predicted then that such tensions “won’t be the last” time they do so.
On Monday, Harbaugh downplayed the tunnel setup as an issue and reiterated that the “actions of these individuals” from Michigan State were responsible. He wasn’t sure if Green – who has made 21 starts for Michigan in his career – would be available for Saturday’s 8-0 Wolverines game at Rutgers.
“This has been an incredibly trying time for everyone involved,” said Harbaugh, a former Michigan standout now in his eighth season as coach. “Especially Ja’Den and Gemon.”
Tom Mars, an attorney representing Green, told the Associated Press that those responsible for harassing his client will “face the full brunt of the law.”
I recently spoke with the father of Gemon Green, the Michigan football player hit with a helmet in the tunnel. He informed me his family is planning to press charges and take legal action against those responsible.
