Jim Larraaga

Jim Larraaga, the coach of the University of Miami men’s basketball team, has now won 700 games as a coach, including a record of 74-31 against his alma mater, George Mason University. That’s an incredible accomplishment. But what are some of the things that have made this feat possible?

Jim Larraaga George Mason

Jim Larraaga

Jim Larranaga left George Mason University to take the head coaching job at the University of Miami. His departure looms large over the Patriots’ program.

Larranaga compiled a stellar career as a coach at the college level. He led the Patriots to five NCAA Tournament berths and three conference titles.

In the process, he laid the foundation for a winning program that is still a perennial contender in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Before his time at George Mason, Larranaga served as the head coach at Bowling Green for 11 seasons.

Although his first team went 9-18, his second team won the CAA regular season title.

At the time of his departure, Larranaga was considered a money-motivated coach with friction between him and the university’s athletic department.

A relationship between Larranaga and then-university president Alan Merten helped to smooth things over.

In the end, the Patriots lost to eventual national champion Florida in the national semifinals.

They were the fourth non-BCS AQ conference team to reach the Final Four in the past quarter century.

Jim Larraaga Providence College

When the University of Miami Hurricanes beat the Providence Friars 74-64 on Thursday in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, head coach Jim Larranaga earned his 700th win as a head coach.

With his win, Larranaga became the 35th coach to reach the mark.

Prior to accepting the Miami head coaching job, Larranaga coached at his alma mater, Providence College, from 1968 through 1971. He led the Friars to a 20-8 record in the 1970-71 season and an NIT appearance.

In the 1969 season, Larranaga was named the New England Division I Sophomore of the Year.

As a senior, Larranaga was a captain and team leader for the Friars. During his time as a player, he was the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 1,258 points.

His collegiate career ended with a 47-12 record.

After a two-year stint in Belgium, Larranaga returned to the U.S. in 1977 for his first head coaching job. He has since won more games than any other American International College coach.

Bowling Green State University

The University of Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball team is in the best position it has been in in a long time. This year, the team is 3-0 and has three double-digit wins.

In fact, the Hurricanes are 78-57 all-time in multi-game events.

The Hurricanes have won three games in a row, including a pair of big wins over the Maryland Terrapins and Providence Colonials. But the real test comes next Sunday at 1 p.m.,

when the Miami team travels to Uncasville, Connecticut, to face a rival from the East. UM, coach, Jim Larranaga is just one win away from the 700th victory of his career.

He is one of 53 coaches in the NCAA with 700 or more wins, but he’s the only active ACC head coach. Rick Barnes, Cliff Ellis, Mike Krzyzewski, Lefty Driesell, and Dean Smith are the others.

As a varsity player, Larranaga starred at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, N.Y., and was captain of the 1970-71 Providence College team. He graduated with an economics degree.

During his collegiate career, Larranaga earned the New England Division I Sophomore of the Year award, and was fifth all-time in school history in scoring with 1,258 points.

Miami

Head coach Jim Larranaga has had a remarkable career. He’s won more than 700 games as a head coach in the Division I game. And now he’s about to reach another milestone.

On Saturday, Miami defeated Larranaga’s alma mater, Providence, 74-64. This marks the 700th win for Larranaga as a head coach.

The Hurricanes have a winning record this season. They are 3-0. In addition, the team has won three straight games, all by double digits. If they win against Maryland on Sunday, they’ll have a 4-0 start to the season.

Miami is one of seven ACC teams to win at least three games this season. Several of the other ACC teams are 0-3. It’s the first time the team has gone 4-0 since the 2018-19 season.

Despite the loss to Kansas, Miami still has a chance to win the first four games of the season. They play Maryland and St. Louis in a pair of games on the road on Sunday.
