US investigates incident at Kabul airport

The US Air Force is studying the incident at Kabul’s airport in which hundreds of Afghan civilians, desperate to flee, stormed a C-17 cargo plane taking off. The United States didn’t say how many died. It did add that human remains were discovered in the plane’s wheels well after it touched down at Al-Udeid Air Base, in the Gulf state Qatar.

Atlantic Council senior associate Holly Dagres tweeted, “As desperate Afghans run away and cling to planes, someone decided to generate money off of their anguish and misery with this awful T-shirt.”

New ‘Pray for Afghanistan’ T-shirts

The brand withdrew the offending t-shirts from Etsy and published a new ‘Pray for Afghanistan’ design. Etsy sells “Free Afghanistan” t-shirts.

Twitter backlash

People on the Internet were quick to criticise the product for how it handled the sad event. An

Holly Dagres, an Iranian-American Middle East analyst, tweeted, “Someone chose to profit from (the Afghans’) suffering and misery by manufacturing this T-shirt.”

Others called it “sick,” “disgusting,” and “shameful.” Etsy, a firm for parents, was criticised for not curating their products and making fun of Afghanis and profiting off their misfortune.
