Kirby The American football coach and player Paul Smart. He is the Georgia Bulldogs’ current head football coach. A 2021 College Football Playoff national championship, a 2018 CFP championship game appearance, a 2017 SEC championship, four SEC Eastern Division titles, 65 victories, and five bowl victories are noteworthy achievements over six years.

His 2021 team won 14 games and went undefeated in the SEC (8-0) for the first time since 1982. It was the fifth straight team to finish the regular season in the CFP top ten. The top-ranked defence helped set 21 school records. The third-ranked Bulldogs beat #2 Michigan 34-11 in the Orange Bowl and No. 1 Alabama 33-18 in the title game. Smart’s 2020 Bulldogs reached their fourth straight New Year’s Six bowl despite a pandemic. The 2020 Bulldog senior class tied the record for most wins by a senior class in school history (44) with a victory over unbeaten Cincinnati in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on January 1, 2021. For the fourth year in a row, Smart’s squad finished the regular season rated in the top ten of the College Football Playoff rankings, the final Associated Press poll, and the USA Today Coaches Poll (2017, 2018, 2019).

In 2019, Smart led the Bulldogs to a third consecutive winning season with 11 or more victories. The senior class’s 44-12 record over four years is tied for the best in school history. Georgia concluded the 2019 season as the fourth-ranked team in the final CFP rankings after defeating three teams that were rated in the top 15 at the time of the season’s conclusion: Notre Dame, Florida, and Auburn. In the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Bulldogs beat Baylor.

In 2018, Georgia finished the regular season with an 11-1 record, won their second consecutive SEC Eastern Division title, and were ranked as high as #4 in the CFP rankings. The University of Georgia football team will be making their eleventh appearance in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 1, 2019. Smart was recognized for his efforts by being named a finalist in the Bobby Dodd Trophy Coach of the Year competition and a semifinalist in the Maxwell Club George Munger National Coach of the Year balloting.

In 2017, Smart’s team had an 11-1 regular season record, won the Southeastern Conference, defeated Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl Game (a CFP semifinal), and made it all the way to the CFP National Championship Game. The Bulldogs beat Auburn 28-7 in the SEC championship game to avenge their lone loss from the regular season. It became the Red and Black’s first conference championship since 2005.

Smart and his players benefited from 2017’s success. The Maxwell Football Club named him George Munger National Coach of the Year. The AP and SEC Coaches named him SEC Coach of the Year. Roquan Smith won first-team All-America and the Dick Butkus Award. Nick Chubb, Lorenzo Carter, and Javon Wims were also first-round picks in 2018.

2017 Georgia made its 20th straight bowl appearance in Smart’s debut season and scored four fourth-quarter comebacks, including wins against No. 8 Auburn and No. 22 UNC. He guided Georgia to an 8-5 record, including a Liberty Bowl win over TCU. Smart’s 2017 recruiting class was the nation’s third-best.

Kirby Smart As a Coach Assistant

Alabama was still seeking a national title when Smart returned to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. He juggled both roles until Alabama’s fourth national title on Jan. 11, 2016. He was coaching in Athens 12 hours later.

Smart was Alabama’s defensive coordinator for seven years.During his career at Alabama, the Crimson Tide won three BCS crowns, one CFP title, three SEC titles, and six SEC Western Division titles.

Smart coached three positions and coordinated at Alabama. 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year, 2009 Broyles Award winner. 2015 Broyles Award finalist.

Before joining Alabama in 2007, Smart coached the Dolphins’ safeties in 2006. He was Georgia’s running backs coach in 2005, LSU’s defensive backs coach in 2004, a graduate assistant at Florida State in 2002-03, Valdosta State’s defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 2001, and Georgia’s administrative assistant in 2000. Smart coached Georgia’s running backs in 2005. His team was third in the SEC with 162.2 rushing yards per game. He coached NFL players Thomas Brown, Danny Ware, and Kregg Lumpkin. At LSU, he coached Corey Webster (2nd round, Giants) and Travis Daniels (4th round, Miami).

He married Mary Beth Lycett, a McDonough, Georgia native who played for UGA from 2000-03. Four-year letterwinner and two-year starter for the Bulldogs. Lycett helped Smart interview for Georgia’s running backs coach job in 2005.
