Lee County Jail

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Lee County Jail refuses to accept more inmates.

A memo was issued by the jail to inform police that it is still operating within COVID-19 restrictions.

They will also take criminal suspects charged with DUIs and violent felonies.

Unnamed police officer said that it took two and a half year to go out and do our jobs. He then arrested people without knowing if they would be admitted to jail.

Because he was afraid of the consequences of speaking against the Lee County Jail policy of not accepting every suspect arrested by Fort Myers or Sanibel police, the officer requested that his name be withheld

The officer stated that it was the same criminals who keep coming back to us on the streets. They know that there are no consequences for their actions.

The Cape Coral Police Department had arrested a man who punched a Mariner High School coach in a brawl. At the end of the report is a note that said:

Church was given an NTA (notice to appear) because the Lee County Jail refused to accept arrestees because of COVID-19 mitigation. And was released.”

“They told us they wouldn’t accept the person. The officer stated that regardless of the charge, they didn’t give a reason, even if it was a felony.

WINK News reached the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in order to find out why COVID-19 restrictions remain in place. The LCSO declined to answer any questions.

All arrestees are accepted in the Collier County and Charlotte County jails without restrictions.
