Maryland Plane Crash Rescue: Witnesses To Plane Crash Rescue Pilot From Frozen Creek In Maryland
Maryland Plane Crash Rescue On Monday morning, witnesses to a small plane crash jumped aboard kayaks and saved the pilot from a frozen creek in Edgewater, Md., authorities reported.
According to Maryland State Police, a Piper Cherokee single-engine plane took off from Lee Airport in Edgewater shortly before 10:30 am and crashed into Beards Creek. Witnesses described hearing the engine sputter and seeing the plane plunge into Beards Creek shortly thereafter.
Two witnesses and an off-duty Anne Arundel County police officer, who overheard a dispatch call about the Maryland Plane Crash Rescue over the police radio, used three kayaks to navigate across an ice-covered creek to reach the downed plane.
State police reported that pilot Steve Couchman (71, of Frederick) got out of his cockpit and stood atop one wing as its passengers approached. He grabbed onto their boats which kept him afloat as the plane went underwater.
Soon after, police officers from Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources arrived by boat and cut through the ice to rescue Couchman. They took him to Annapolis Landing Marina where an ambulance met them.
Couchman was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where police said he is receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no other injuries were reported
