Mekhi Phifer was born in Harlem, Manhattan, and was raised by his mother, Rhoda, a high school teacher. Phifer’s acting career began when he auditioned at an open casting call for director Spike Lee’s Clockers (1995) and was selected for the leading role.
His ex-wife, the actress Malinda Williams, Phifer has a son. In 2007, Oni Souratha gave birth to his second son in Los Angeles. Phifer wed his longterm partner Reshelet Barnes in Beverly Hills, California, on March 30, 2013.
Perhaps his most well-known roles are his many years as Dr. Greg Pratt on the NBC medical drama ER and his co-starring part opposite Eminem in the motion picture 8 Mile. Before season 3, he played Ben Reynolds, a regular on the Fox crime drama Lie to Me.
