Mississippi Football Coach Mike Leach in Hospital, Remains in Critical Condition
On the day after being hospitalized for a “personal health issue,” Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach in hospital and is listed in critical condition, the university announced Monday.
“Mike’s family is with him and deeply appreciates all the outpouring of love and support for the coach,” Mississippi State said in a statement. “But they also ask that their privacy respected at this time.”
On Sunday, the school released a statement that Leach had experienced medical complications at his residence in Starkville, Mississippi. According to the university, he treated at a local hospital before airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi for further care, according to their account to the Associated Press.
Leach, 61, is in his third season at Mississippi State and boasts a 19-17 record. He recently shared that he had suffered from pneumonia late in the season which had been causing him to cough excessively.
Leach, renowned for his Air Raid offenses, has amassed an impressive 158-107 record in 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State.
On Sunday, school president Mark Keenum and interim athletic director Bracky Brett released a statement announcing that defensive coordinator Zach Arnett would serve as “in charge” of the MSU football team during Leach’s absence.
On Jan. 2 (11:05 p.m. ET, ESPN), Georgia Bulldogs (8-4, 4-4 SEC) are set to face Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big 10) in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida. It remains uncertain if this game will played or not.
Mike Leach in Hospital: Mississippi State Coach Suffering
Mississippi State issued a statement acknowledging his personal health issue without providing further details. The statement read:
“At present, MSU has no further information regarding Coach Leach’s condition. At this time, the university will express its deepest sympathies to Mike and Sharon Leach as well as his family.”
Mike Leach has guided Mississippi State to a 19-17 record since 2020, improving from 4-7 in 2020 to 7-6 in 2021 and 8-4 this season. The Bulldogs will next play Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl a month from now.
Coach Leach will return soon, so the university has appointed Zach Arnett as interim coach. As defensive and linebackers coach, he would assume temporary control of the post if all goes according to plan.
Mike Leach is 61 years old and boasts an impressive college coaching resume despite never playing football in college. Rumors swirl that he may have suffered a heart attack, though this has yet to officially confirmed.
