Pete Buttigieg defends husband’s tweet on Kavanaugh’s dining protest incident
Pete Buttigieg Kavanaugh: Two days after Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh fled abortion rights protesters at Morton’s steakhouse in D.C., Chasten Buttigieg — husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — tweeted his assessment of the incident.
Chasten Buttigieg wrote that Kavanaugh “sounded like he just wanted some privacy to make his own dining decisions,” alluding to Kavanaugh’s recent vote to overturn Roe v Wade – the 1973 court decision which had guaranteed abortion access based on Americans’ right to privacy.
Some conservatives, including former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, expressed disappointment over what he deemed an endorsement of “mob intimidation tactics” as “wildly irresponsible.” Nonetheless, Pete Buttigieg Kavanaugh stood by his husband’s remarks during a Sunday interview with Fox News’ Mike Emanuel.
“Public figures should always be free from violence, intimidation and harassment – but never from criticism or people exercising their First Amendment rights,” Buttigieg declared during a “Fox News Sunday” appearance.

He noted that officials should expect public protests after taking away an important right which the majority of Americans support.
“For as long as I can recall,” Buttigieg lamented, “US case law has consistently upheld that the Constitution protects the right to privacy.” However, that has now been overturned by justices such as Justice Kavanaugh who, I recall, pledged before God and everyone – including Congress – that they would leave settled case law alone.
In May, abortion rights advocates began protesting outside conservative justices’ homes. With mounting frustration over abortion restrictions at the state level, advocacy groups like ShutDownDC have encouraged more public displays of dissatisfaction — offering service industry workers up to $250 for sightings of those who voted to overturn Roe.
On Wednesday evening, ShutDownDC reported a tip that Kavanaugh had “snuck out for an elegant DC dinner.” Their Twitter account then offered to share his location with its nearly 25,000 followers.
According to Politico, as protesters gathered outside Morton’s, the justice left through the back exit without eating dessert. This incident was swiftly condemned by the restaurant, which stated that politics should never trample upon people’s right to congregate and enjoy dinner together.
That statement has put Morton’s in a precarious situation. Since last week, its Facebook page has been deluged with negative ratings and its Yelp page no longer allows posts due to “increased public attention… which often means people come here to share their views on the news.” Some have called for boycotting Morton’s across TikTok and Twitter, while thousands have reportedly made fake reservations.
On Fox News Sunday, Pete Buttigieg — who has himself been the target of protests over the years — condemned violence or harassment against officials but said people have the right to challenge those leaders publicly.
“Protesting peacefully outside in a public space — yes,” he said. “I can’t even count how many spaces, venues and scenarios where I’ve been protested.”
The transportation secretary compared Morton’s protest, in which “the justice never even came into contact with these protesters, reportedly didn’t see or hear them” to the Jan. 6 Capitol siege, in which a mob “very nearly succeeded” in preventing peaceful transfer of power.
