Sydney police have begun an investigation after a teen was admitted to hospital with an injury from a gunshot.

Police in Australia’s state New South Wales (NSW) confirmed on Saturday that police were summoned to an emergency room in Bankstown approximately 18 km northwest of central Sydney in the evening of Friday when a 17-year-old was brought at the emergency department with an injury from a gunshot to the right thigh.

The 17-year-old, who’s injuries were not deemed life-threatening, was assisted by a man aged 18 years old. Both refused to help the police with their inquiries, NSW Police said.

Police attempted to detain the 18-year old for hiding an offence after they alleged that he assaulted two officers who were injured, one of whom was.

He was transported to a nearby police station, where he had is believed to have “made a number of threats towards officers.”

The 18-year-old is charged with six counts of assault on an officer of the police and resisting or hindering arrest, as well as three charges of intimidation an officer.

Police have seized a car that believed to be used by the men to get to the hospital. They also started investigations into the incident, Xinhua news agency reported.

This week Police in South Australia (SA) announced that they have created a task force to fight the violent crimes committed by young groups.

SA Police announced the new Youth and Street Gangs Task Force on Wednesday, as part of an increase in police resources dedicated to investigate youth crimes such as online crime, domestic violence, and retail theft.

Commissar Grant Stevens said that the new task force will respond to criminals and conduct preventive and rehabilitation work.

“Youth crime is not just about the criminality, but the recruitment of younger members, so the task force provides an opportunity to break this cycle,” said the leader declared in an announcement.

“This permanent task force will disrupt and reduce the criminal activities of a target group of offenders, particularly focusing on crimes of violence that pose a significant risk to community safety.”

The task force was formed through the merger of two police departments and including 13 police officers in the ranks of the task force.

SA Police data released earlier in January showed that the amount of crimes committed by youth aged 10-17 grew by 140 percent, up from 6,938 during 2018-19 up to 16,710 in 2023-24.
