Who Was Renee Poussaint?
Renee Poussaint life (August 12, 1944 – March 4, 2022) was an Emmy Award-winning American broadcast journalist and educator renowned for her reporting and advocacy on Black history.
Renee Poussaint served as co-anchor of Channel 7’s 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts beginning in 1978 and held that position for nearly ten years. We regret to inform you that she passed away on Friday, March 4th at 77 years old due to complications related to lung cancer, according to her husband Henry Richardson’s account.

She was a pioneering journalist, beginning her career as an anchorperson for ABC World News Tonight from 1970 on. As Peter Jennings’ replacement on ABC World News Tonight, Pouissant provided valuable coverage from around the world.
Renee Poussaint was a former network correspondent for CBS and ABC News, earning three national Emmy awards for her reporting, writing and interviewing work on ABC’s PrimeTime Live show. Sam Ford of 7News shared a touching tribute about Renee on his Facebook page.
She recruited to WJLA after working at WBBM-TV and CBS in Chicago as well as CBS in Washington. According to The History Makers, a digital history site, she had grown tired of network news when the news director of WJLA reached out and offered her the job.
Caroline Satchell, Renee’s last producer at WJLA and producer for her goodbye segment as she prepared to head off to Prime Time at ABC News, did the video. According to Satchell, Renee walked up to her and thanked her.
She told her, “I know you’re trying to make me cry on camera – but no matter how hard you try, it will not happen.'”
Renee Poussaint left 7 to join ABC for projects related to Africa, one of her passions. While reporting from hotspots around the world such as Haiti, South Africa and Uganda for ABC, Poussaint found inspiration.
Recently, Poissant served as an adjunct lecturer at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Matthews reported that Renee often invited her to speak to students.
