Nitrile is a synthetic rubber polymer. Yet, it is also known as Buna-N and NBR (nitrile-butadiene rubber). The molecules of butadiene and acrylonitrile have joined to form this copolymer. Nitrile rubber is safe to use. Although it is a cyanide, acrylonitrile does not dissociate into harmless ions when dissolved in water, making poisonous cyanide so lethal. Types of NBR Rubber

NBR rubber comes in hundreds of different types. It is distinguished by characteristics, including acrylonitrile percentage polymerization temperature. Depending on how you want to use it, you can classify it as a particular or a general type. Additionally, there are changes such as;

  • Liquid NBR rubber
  • Partly cross-linked NBR rubber
  • Carboxyl NBR rubber
  • Hydrogenated NBR rubber
  • Nitrile and polyvinyl chloride co-precipitated rubber

High-temperature polymerized NBR rubber is characterized by a 30-50 °C polymerization temperature and an initiator of potassium persulfate. The soft NBR rubber is characterized by a 0-30 °C polymerization temperature with hydrogen peroxide cumene-ethylenediamine. Soft NBR rubber is produced by polymerizing sodium tetraacetate, ferrous sulfate, and diamond powder. It requires temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. General-type NBR rubber falls into one of five categories depending on the amount of acrylonitrile present.

  • The acrylonitrile percentage in high-quality NBR rubber ranges from 36 to 42 percent.
  • NBR rubber has an acrylonitrile concentration of less than 24 percent.
  • A very high acrylonitrile NBR rubber with a composition above 43% acrylonitrile.
  • The acrylonitrile percentage of medium and high acrylonitrile NBR rubber ranges from 31% to 35%
  • Medium-hardness NBR rubber with a 25-30% acrylonitrile composition.

Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is the industry standard for automotive and heavy-duty applications. Industrial nitrile rubber (NBR) is an elastomer that can resist oil, gasoline, and chemicals when the right acrylonitrile concentration is chosen in conjunction with other qualities. NBR has a variety of uses in the automobile industry. 

Yet it includes hoses, seals, and grommets for transporting water, gasoline, and oil. The durability of NBR materials makes them suitable for use in any vehicle. The durability of this type of synthetic rubber makes it an excellent choice for single-use medical and testing gloves. 

Nitrile Rubber Characteristics

In addition to being oil-resistant, nitrile rubber is also durable and temperature-resistant. This property makes it a desirable material for various applications. Nitrile rubber’s oil resistance is proportional to its acrylonitrile content. Increasing the amount of acrylonitrile in a rubber formula makes it more resistant to oil swelling. 

Yet, it leads to more durability and less gas permeability. Reduced acrylonitrile content improves low-temperature flexibility. It can withstand high temperatures without breaking down and is strong and durable.

The NBR rubber compound, called O-rings or O-rings, can withstand temperatures ranging from -50 degrees Fahrenheit to +105 degrees Fahrenheit. It has high resistance to various chemicals and solvents. This may include aliphatic hydrocarbons and caustics. 

It is three times as puncture-resistant as natural rubber. But it’s not as adaptable. Nitrile is more cost-effective than fluoroelastomers. Hydrogenated nitrile, a kind of rubber, is flexible even when cold and resistant to heat and oxidation.

However, nitrile isn’t impervious to the elements or all substances. It has a low flame, ozone, and weather tolerance and responds adversely. It is also incompatible with solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons. This can cause severe burns to anyone wearing nitrile materials that come into contact with nitric acid or oxidizers.

Nitrile butadiene rubber, or NBR for short, is a polymer comprising the synthetic rubbers acrylonitrile and butadiene. It can withstand different chemicals, oils, and temperatures, making it a popular choice for seals. NBR seals provide several benefits, including the following:

  • Excellent tolerance to chemicals

Storage of NBR

Keep any components made of NBR out of direct sunlight. If maintained, Nitrile/NBR materials fall within the standard’s Group B Rubber, giving them a seven-year shelf life. Once again, this may affect the shelf life and extension time of a commercial-quality product you have purchased.

What About Carboxylated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (XNBR)?

The rubber compound, carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR), is an upgraded NBR form. Its excellent strength and abrasion resistance make it ideal for oil-resistant applications like the fuel systems of cars, boats, and planes. It outperforms NBR in oil and non-polar solvent resistance and abrasion resistance. Conversely, its resistance to ozone, weathering, and steam is low
