What Is The “Daddy Meme,” And Why Are Adults Getting In A Fight Over It?
This is part of an occasional series in which we explain the internet things daddy meme. We like to call it meme-splaining; some might call it meme-ruining. Regardless, if you come across an image macro, hashtag, app, or GIF that puzzles you, we have the answers – at least as far as they can be had.
Let’s be clear about that: it doesn’t mean “father”
But the slang endearment, popular on Twitter and Instagram (among other platforms), usually serves to express respect/adoration for a male authority figure. The female equivalent would be “mom.” Writing on her Tumblr in November 2014, 18-year-old singer Lorde explained the meme this way:
Youths often use this expression as a compliment; it means “adopt me/be my second mom/I think of you as such an incredible mother figure!”.
Though not always family-friendly, the daddy meme often has a sexual undertone. If you weren’t feeling attracted to someone, chances are good that they wouldn’t want your “daddy”/”mom”. In March 2018, GQ attempted to quantify how often celebrities were “daddy” on Twitter – and found that Zayn Malik, Drake, and even The Biebs get frequent “daddies”.
Where it Began
This particular, laudatory use of “daddy” — and others like it, more on that in a moment — has its origins on teenage fan websites. It was probably Lorde’s 2014 “mom” tweet to Kim Kardashian that first introduced adults to this term; since then it’s become popular among teens, ironic adults, and some die-hard Trumpies.
When discussing the history of “daddy,” however, things become a bit more nuanced. Eve Peyser suggests it has something to do with “daddy issues” and some larger incestuous questions. Alana Levinson recently featured for Mel in which she traced back the sexualization of “daddy” through popular music and kink culture. Here’s how Levinson explains the connection between BDSM and modern daddy meme:
It’s easy to overlook that “Daddy” is actually a sexual fetish. According to an anonymous 28-year-old woman, using the term Daddy provides just enough semi-roleplay without having to go all in or engage in full immersive roleplay is like having the right amount of sexual stimulation without going full leather or engaging in full immersive roleplay.
In this context, “daddy” serves as an invitation to explore the dominant/submissive dynamic, which doesn’t always need to be overtly sexual. It could be funny, playful or simply strange.
Not everyone finds this context humorous or playful, however. On August 20, Internet troll Shanley Kane declared in a series of profanity-laced tweets that the term “daddy” originated among marginalized queer subcultures and its use outside those cultures was an act of “appropriation.” This sparked an array of outraged, mocking, and occasionally threatening responses under the hashtag #daddygate.
Kane later acknowledged that many subcultures use the term “daddy,” so we’re content to put that controversy behind us.
Learning How to Use It Like an Expert when You Understand what You’re Doing
Are you over 17? Well then…maybe not. If you can comprehend the potential political and psychosexual repercussions of using “daddy,” then perhaps it’s also time for a thesaurus.
Alternatively, you could use the teenage compliment as an ironic/subversive critique (!). Unfortunately, this territory has become well-trod and somewhat tiresome – especially after #daddygate – but if you’re reading this then chances are good that you already are behind in terms of irony and subversive critique anyway.
An insightful comment to make at your next geeky dinner party
No, it has nothing to do with dads at all. Instead, it serves as a commentary on hero-worship and power dynamics – sometimes even an attempt at reversing them. According to Peyser in New York magazine
A grown woman says “daddy” with intention, self-assurance, and plenty of cynicism. We adopted “daddy” as our own, which allows us to gently poke fun at patriarchal structures without taking away from their meaning.
The funny part about “daddy” is that we have full control over how it manifests; in time, perhaps even becoming our own daddy!
We all can agree that this was much more enjoyable when the teens were involved.

On Tuesday evening, an earthquake hit a mountainous region in Afghanistan’s northeast near the border with Pakistan.
From Jurm Valley in China, earthquakes could be felt as far away as India.
“It was an absolutely terrifying tremor,” Kabul resident Khatera told AFP news agency after fleeing her fifth-floor apartment.
Nine of the confirmed deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
According to Afghanistan’s health ministry spokesman, three more people were tragically lost in Laghman province near Pakistan’s border. One child was among them, AFP reported.
Many families had been away from their homes celebrating the Persian New Year or Nowruz when the Earthquake in Pakistan and Afghanistan struck.
Emergency workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported to AFP that the damage found so far had been less than anticipated.
However, the remoteness and rugged terrain of affected areas could potentially hinder relief and rescue operations.
Many in the affected regions braved near-freezing temperatures to sleep outside after the earthquake, fearing possible aftershocks. Some had fled their homes barefoot when they felt the shaking.
Islamabad, Pakistan saw the evacuation of a multi-story residential block after huge cracks appeared in its structure.
Phone lines have been disrupted, and in Pakistan, the highway in the Swat area has been blocked due to landslides.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed disaster agencies to take immediate measures for people’s relief.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, earthquakes were felt across a 1,000 km area that includes India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan.
Earthquakes are more likely to occur here due to their location at the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
In June 2013, more than 1,000 people died when a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan’s Paktika province – the country’s deadliest earthquake in nearly 25 years.
