Captain of the ship
A 65-year old ship captain was convicted of drunk driving while operating an 8 000-ton vessel. According to the Seattle Times, the ship was operating so badly that it was in violation of maritime law. The captain was fined $600.
The ship is currently not on the water but it remains to see what transpired during the drunken driving. Although the incident was not unexpected, given the captain’s old age, it raised some questions about the company’s culture of discretion.
The ship’s captain was granted permission to sail under a pseudonym for a time, but this was quickly removed. His post was then terminated. An investigation later revealed that the ship’s Captain had a history involving alcohol and drug abuse dating back to the mid-nineties.
Pledging guilty to being drunk while on duty
A former captain of a container vessel was brought into court earlier this week for violating etiquette. He was the captain of a vessel 13 years old and flew a Portuguese flag. He was later cited for minor offenses, but not as serious as it had been reported. Later, he was fined and fired.
Although he was fined for minor violations like forgetting to lock the vessel at port, the most serious offense was an alcohol-related offense. His blood test showed a level of 110 micrograms per 100 milliliters, which is higher than the legal limit of 50. He was fined PS600. He was also required to pay PS780 court costs.
This is a shame, as he had a stellar track record in the past 25 years. Another similar story ended in a different way. A veteran of 63 years was fired from a job that he had held for over 30 years.
