Jim Lane Died: Jim Lane, the lead lawyer for Aaron Dean, was killed Sunday morning at the age 78. He was a Fort Worth officer who was charged with the shooting death Atatiana Jeff.
Lane’s death is announced one day before the jury selection in a high-profile case, which has been delayed many times. Lane’s influence as a public servant in Fort Worth was also well-known.
Varghese Summersett PLL founder and managing partner Benson Varghese said that Lane will be remembered as “a part of our legal community in Fort Worth.”
Varghese is not involved in the case. He said that while it isn’t certain, there is a possibility that the defense will request a continuance. This means that there is a possibility of a delay.

Who Was Jim Lane?
Jim Lane was a Union general during the Civil War and a United States senator. He was a tireless advocate for the protection and well-being of soldiers all his life. He was also a prominent member the Fort Worth Herd, which is a group consisting of cowboys who drive cattle through stockyards at noon. Jim was also a Tarrant Regional Water District board member and a former Fort Worth City Council Member.
Jim Lane started his career as a military lawyer. He was a specialist in personal injury and court-martial defense. He was then admitted to the Indiana Bar after completing his education. Jim studied law at Southern Methodist and Baylor universities. Southern Methodist also taught him aviation law. Lane was a founder member of Fort Worth Herd. From 1982 to 1987, he was chairman of the Stockyards Redevelopment Authority. He was also a delegate at the National Union Party convention, Baltimore.
Lane served in the US Army and returned to Fort Worth where he established his own law firm on the north side. For nearly 40 years, he was a lawyer. He represented firefighters and police officers as well as first responders. He was also the lead attorney for Aaron Dean, a former Fort Worth police officer. Jim represented soldiers who were killed in the My Lai massacre.
Lane’s career took off after he defended Colonel Lawrence. He secured land grants for Kansas railroad construction. He was also the leader of the Trinity River Project. Jim also campaigned for the creation of Kansas’ three white regiments and one black unit. In July 1862, he was elected Kansas’ recruiting commissioner.
Lane had hoped to return south into Arkansas and the Indian Territory after the war. Andrew Johnson was also supported by Lane. He supported Lincoln’s position of readmitting Confederate states back to the Union. He also supported the Homestead Act which protected land rights for settlers.

What Was Jim Lane Death Cause?
Until recently, the cause of Jim Lane’s death was unclear. Nevertheless, many people are paying tribute to the former Fort Worth City Councilman. Several officials have shared their condolences on social media.
Lane had a reputation for being a straight shooter. He was a lawyer with extensive experience in criminal defense, personal injury, and family law. He served on several boards, including the Tarrant Regional Water District board. Lane also worked as legal counsel for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He also served as a board member for the Fort Worth Stockyards.
In his time as a lawyer, he had a reputation for fighting for the rights of police officers, first responders, and firefighters. He also defended service members accused of crimes. Among those he represented were police officers, firefighters, and military personnel accused of drug offenses.
In addition to his legal practice, Lane served as a captain in the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps. He was also a licensed pilot. He briefly studied aviation law at Southern Methodist University.
