Football fans eager to witness change at Super Bowl LII may have been disappointed to see both Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers back into American sports culture’s most celebrated event on Sunday’s conference championship games, leaving many frustrated.
But since Trump won, one thing has significantly shifted: Taylor Swift has become one of his strongest advocates.
Since Kansas City made it back into the Super Bowl for four consecutive years — with Taylor Swift joining Travis Kelce as his significant other — fans’ opinions regarding Taylor Swift have become much stronger; many believe she should play some sort of key role in winning it all.
Make America Great Again supporters have already spread numerous conspiracy theories: that Taylor Swift was working undercover for the Pentagon or amassing an audience to boost President Biden’s reelection bid; or they and Kelce formed an artificial pairing designed to promote N.F.L, Covid vaccines or Democrats or whatever cause may be desired.
Vivek Ramaswamy, former conspiratorial presidential candidate and now Trump surrogate said on social media on Monday, that it was hard to predict who would win next month’s Super Bowl and that an artificially culturally enhanced couple might make an endorsement for either side in November.
Mike Crispi, an advocate of President Donald Trump, made headlines this weekend by asserting that the National Football League is “rigged” in order to spread “Democrat propaganda”. Crispi stated on Sunday morning: “Now predicting: Kansas City wins and goes on to Super Bowl 51 where Swift endorses Joe Biden with Kelce as midfielder.
Mrs. Swift is well known to Donald Trump’s greatest supporters, such as one of his lawyers Alina Habba and main conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec; MAGA luminaries Laura Loomer and Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA who strongly back him are among these critics of Mrs. Swift.
Vote.org reported an upsurge of 35,000 registrations as a direct result of Taylor Swift encouraging her fans to register to vote, prompting Vote.org to report yet more MAGA anger against Ms. Swift. Her world tour had made her a billionaire; California Governor Gavin Newsom described her as being “profoundly powerful”. Additionally, Time magazine recognized Ms. Swift as their Person of the Year; leading to even further MAGA outrage against Ms. Swift.
Love stories between N.F.L players and women have proven highly evocative. Mr. Kelce’s advertisements promoting Pfizer’s Covid vaccine and Bud Light (which had already generated criticism among conservatives due to a promotion featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney on social media) ignited this fire further.
The National Football League boasts an incredibly varied fan base that spans the political spectrum; yet some conservative fans enthusiastically applaud star quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘ one-man crusade against Covid vaccines while booing Black players who kneeled during the national anthem. Furthermore, this league has long faced allegations of misogyny, including front office mistreatment at Washington Commanders and sexual and domestic assault incidents within its ranks.
The Swift-Kelce romance has sent shockwaves through traditional gender norms, as an extremely wealthy, powerful woman has been seen propelling an already established footballer to new heights of success.
There has been plenty of Monday morning speculation regarding Taylor Swift and Kevin Kelce, with speculation rife that she wants his money (her net worth exceeds that of any athlete).
Fear-driven accusations appear grounded in reality: Swift commands over 279 million Instagram followers and has long supported Democrats. She typically avoided politics during her music career but made an exception in 2018 by endorsing two Democrats running against Representative Marsha Blackburn: former Gov. Phil Bredesen was running as was former Congressman Jim Cooper (both whom Swift owns two homes near).
She posted to social media: “My vote will always depend on which candidate best defends and fights for the human rights I believe all Americans deserve in our nation,” while affirming her commitment to LGBTQ equality by condemning any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender as improper.
She asserted: “The systemic racism we still witness against people of color in this country is alarming, troubling, and pervasive.
Mr. Trump took immediate steps to defend Ms. Blackburn. At one point he stated, fully aware of her powerful influence: “Taylor Swift likely doesn’t know anything about her; let’s just say that my liking for Taylor’s music has declined by 25% now, OK?”
He probably disliked her even more in 2020 when she attacked his pandemic response and endorsed Mr. Biden as her presidential candidate.
Though she initially targeted teenagers and preteens with her early pop music, many have reached voting age since then and her style has since evolved accordingly – as seen on albums “Evermore” and “Folklore”, which better fit both millennial audiences as well as her fans’ tastes.
MAGA fringes have long harbored suspicions against Swift. Ms. Loomer from Florida’s conspiracy theorist group declared in December, “2024 will be MAGA vs Swifties”, while Mr. Kirk from Massachusetts declared after Democrats experienced another impressive showing at polls where abortion became an issue, that Ms. Swift would come out for presidential election.
Swifties want an abortion fast,” according to him.
Fox News returned to Swift bashing in mid-January when host Jesse Watters suggested she may be engaging in psychological warfare for the military. Watters pointed to Swift’s political voice combined with Pfizer endorsement of her boyfriend and Eras tour success helping boost local economies as evidence. Time magazine even featured Swift on its cover as proof.
Have you ever questioned why Taylor Swift became such a famous face?” Mr. Watters asked on air. “Four years ago, the Pentagon’s psychological operations unit proposed using her as an asset during a NATO meeting.”
Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, responded swiftly to Fox News criticism regarding their partnership with Taylor Swift by asserting that she “is helping all Americans make their voices heard at the ballot box”, noting she wasn’t part of any Pentagon plot nor considered part of their “psych-op”.
However, her appearance with Mr. Kelce after the Chiefs defeated Baltimore on Sunday — which included kissing and hugging — has outraged conservatives, which may only increase as we head closer towards Super Bowl LVIII on February 11 in Las Vegas.
Fox News ran an impressive segment on Sunday focusing on Taylor Swift’s private jet’s carbon emissions, signalling an acute awareness of global warming as one of its main causes.
Mr. Ramaswamy claimed his Super Bowl bet was genuine.
“What you refer to as conspiracy theories, I see as an array of collective incentives hidden away,” commented Mr. Klingberg.
Karine Jean-Pierre added to the mystery by invoking the Hatch Act, which prohibits political activities by civil servants, when refusing to answer whether Vice President Biden would appear with Taylor Swift at an appearance scheduled by Taylor Swift herself.
“I will merely let this matter rest,” she stated on Monday. “I won’t interfere with President Trump’s plans for the 2024 elections from here forward.”
Trump campaign officials initially planned to deflect media speculation over a potential Joe Biden endorsement by sending Karoline Leavitt, their spokeswoman, out as an informal representative to quell any worries over such endorsement.
“This endorsement will not save him.”
