Who is Elisabeth Fritzl?
Elisabeth Fritzl was born in Austria to Josef and Rosemarie Fritzl in 1966. She had six siblings – three sisters and three brothers. Josef started abusing Elisabeth when she was only 11 years old in 1977. Once finished schooling when she turned 15, Elisabeth began training to be a waitress; upon turning 15, she fled from home in 1983 in search of refuge with friends in Vienna before eventually rejoining her waitress course and finding employment nearby.
What happened to Elisabeth Fritzl?
Elisabeth Fritzl was held captive for 24 years, confined in a makeshift cellar by her father Josef Fritzl and regularly tortured. On August 28, 1984, Josef called in Elisabeth who was 18 at the time, thinking they needed help installing a newly renovated cellar door but instead knocked her unconscious with an ether-soaked towel, before lying to both Elisabeth’s mother and police that she was running away and had joined a cult.
Fritzl was subjected to assaults and sexual abuse from her father for most of her time in captivity, giving birth to seven children as a result of multiple incidents of rape and incest, one of whom died shortly after birth; three were carried up by Elisabeth herself while three more were cared for by Fritzl and Elisabeth’s mother; however on April 26, 2008 aged 42 Elisabeth finally gained freedom when one of her children fell unconscious, prompting Josef to agreeing to get her medical care from him; she managed to escape her basement prison cell after having had one fell unconscious, prompting Josef to agreeing to take her medical attention in her basement cell after one fell unconscious, which allowed her escape after Josef agreed to get medical help for Elisabeth out.
Where is Elisabeth Fritzl today?
Elisabeth Fritzl and her children were immediately placed under state care, before moving to a village in northern Austria where therapy sessions could commence. According to Meaww, she now reportedly lives with them all in a well-lit home with their ages ranging between 17-35.
Two of the six children experienced major anxiety and panic attacks and experienced difficulty healing; therefore they required mood-altering drugs, exercise plans, and diet plans as part of their road to healing due to their former lifestyle.
Does Girl in the Basement reflect an actual story?
Girl in the Basement is inspired by Elisabeth Fritzl’s real life account of being held captive and tortured by her father Josef from 1984 until 2008 in their Amstetten home, Austria. While this film makes changes to characters and locations to better portray Elisabeth’s tragedy in real life, Sara stands in as an embodiment of Elisabeth, an Austrian girl imprisoned by Josef in their basement home.
