The Bronx River Parkway, which runs along the Bronx River from Bronx Zoo to Kensico Dam in Westchester County, has seen several fatal crashes over time. Some notable ones are:

  • In 2012, Maria Gonzalez lost control of their SUV while speeding and crashed off a parkway into the Bronx Zoo, killing seven members of her family including three children. Apparently speeding and losing control led her to lose control over it as she speeded along.
  • In 2020, several people were injured after more than a dozen cars collided near the Cross Bronx Expressway parkway and hit each other head-on. Drivers blamed slippery roads caused by snow for this accident.
  • In 2023, a 49-year-old man lost control of his Infiniti and collided with both a tree and light pole on Hutchinson River Parkway – a branch of Bronx River Parkway – near Exit 4 at around 2:45 a.m. He died due to this collision which took place just minutes later at 2:46 AM.

How to prevent crashes on the Parkway

The Bronx River Parkway, built in the 1920s and one of the oldest parkways in America, presents unique driving challenges at high speeds. Its narrow lanes, sharp curves and steep grades make driving challenging; additionally, this ancient roadway lacks modern safety features like guardrails or median barriers that could prevent cars from veering off-road or colliding with oncoming traffic.

Drivers looking to reduce the risk of accidents on the Bronx River Parkway should heed these tips:

  • Drive within or below the speed limit on most parts of the parkway (40 mph). Be mindful of road conditions, adjusting your speed accordingly and avoid driving in adverse weather or limited visibility conditions.
  • Keep a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles and try not to make sudden lane changes or brake abruptly.
  • Always wear your seat belt, and ensure all passengers do the same.
  • In the event of an accident or witnessing one, call 911 immediately and remain in your vehicle until help arrives; do not attempt to cross parkways or move injured individuals before receiving assistance.
